What a way to celebrate Earth Day - New plan expected for future of Carp Dump
For immediate release: April 22, 2009.
(Queen’s Park, Toronto) – “Today’s Citizen article about a new proposal for the Carp Road Landfill is quite the way for Waste Management to wish us all a happy Earth Day,” said Carleton-Mississippi Mills MPP Norm Sterling.
The Carp Road Landfill has been in operation for more than 30 years and was expected to close in 2010. In January of 2006 Waste Management of Canada put forward an initial proposal to expand the Carp landfill site to more than double its capacity and extend its life for 25 years. After overwhelming public opposition and a petition Mr. Sterling introduced into the Legislature with almost 9,000 signatures, this proposal was withdrawn.
Now Waste Management is claiming that there was never any plan for the dump to close and warning residents that they will be putting forward a new proposal for the future of the dump later this year.
“I oppose any plan to expand or extend the life of this landfill site because the City of Ottawa has grown rapidly in this area over the past decade or more,” explained Mr. Sterling. “This dump was in an appropriate location when it opened three decades ago however it does not make sense to expand this facility near such a densely populated residential community.”
“Three years ago today I rallied with the community to oppose the expansion of this facility and I will do the same again. I encourage my municipal counterparts and all concerned citizens to join together to force the Minister of the Environment to find other solutions to managing our waste.”
